Pinkie starts school for the first time on Tuesday. My main worry as all parents do, is will she settle. We have done lots of preparation for this day. About 3 months ago we started to talk to Pinkie about the school, what would happen, how she would stay at school in the mornings, how mum would walk her to school then leave her with the teacher. Around the same time we had a keyworkers meeting at the school to discuss Pinkie and all her problems and quirks, thinking of strategies to overcome any possible problems. At this meeting the school suggested that they compile a social story book for Pinkie with all the pictures of the teachers and adults that would work with her, places round the school that Pinkie was likely to go They were so thorough even down to the butterfly picture on her coat peg.We have gone through this book every day just in case any of the pictures have changed.
Tuesday is going to be such a wonderful but difficult day for us both. For Pinkie is going to be wonderful that she is starting a new chapter in her life but difficult because she will have so much change to cope with yet on the flip side she will encounter so many new experiences. For me it is going to be really difficult as I will be wondering if she is getting on ok, does she like the other children and do they like her. Is she doing what the teacher is telling her, am I going to get a phone call. The list of worries is endless. Not only is my baby girl going to school but its my baby girl with special needs. Years ago she would have just been put into a school no help what so ever and left to struggle. Now a days the teachers are better trained to cope with such children and who knows this could be the making of her. Best of luck to Pinkie for Tuesday.
